The XML Declaration

• At the top of the document, you normally find an XML declaration:

  <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1" standalone="yes"?>

• version attribute

  • required

  • always has the value 1.0

• standalone attribute

  • yes

  • no

• encoding attribute

  • UTF-8

  • ISO-8859-1

  • etc.
