• All objects can be written as well-formed XML text

• Impossible to create malformed documents

• Validity can be enforced by subclasses

• Syntax sugar is not represented:

  • CDATA sections
  • Character and entity references
  • Attribute order
  • Defaulted vs. specified attributes
